Forgotten Women, Lost Songs The contributions and heroics of women jazz artists often go unnoticed, and for this program, vocalist and historian Amanda King will share the extraordinary work of two leading mid-20th century musicians: trumpeter, singer and actress Valaida Snow and bandleader, singer and composer Blanche Calloway. Snow was a multi-instrumentalist but chose the trumpet as her focus, becoming heralded as “Little Louis” after the great Satchmo himself. Calloway – older sibling to Cab Calloway – was the first black female bandleader to direct an all-male ensemble and proved to be quite a prolific composer, having a principal role in penning the hit “Minnie the Moocher.”
